Celebrating Michaelmas

Today is Michaelmas, the Christian festival that celebrates the archangels: St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael.

A little-known fact (in the US at least) is that the English school calendar was built around major Feast Days. Even to this day at Oxford and Cambridge, the first Fall school term is referred to as “Michaelmas”!

On this day, we reflect upon St. Michael’s battle against Satan and his victory in casting Satan into Hell. St. Michael’s actions can serve as a reminder for us to actively work against Satan every day, whether it means changing the music we listen to, the content we consume, or how we treat others in our life. To help in this, we have included a prayer to St. Michael below:

“Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.”
